Description
After the aircrafts here something of a different avian flavor.
When I saw this bird as I was leaving the house, it had just captured another smaller bird, probably a sparrow, and was about to eat it sitting on top of a neighbourgh's tv antenna. So I immediatelly went back to get my gear and from about 60m I took some pictures of the bird feeding. But the day was so dark and slightly foggy that with the 2x extender on my 400mm the pictures weren't very clear, I can probably clean a couple of them in Photoshop if anybody wants to see a poor sparrow being dismemberd!
After 1/2 hour of waiting the sun suddenly appeared and I was able to take a couple of shots as the bird was taking off, although with the 2x magnifier the picture lacks a bit of resolution (I have to get me a f2.8 lens, but $$$$).
What is interesting is the bird is a Merlin, which we don't usually see in urban areas (I live in the city, less then 10 mn from downtown Montreal, about 3 000 000 inhabitants), but has been, with the mate, a regular in the area for the last 3 years. As a matter of fact, the neighbourhood is teeming with wildlife of different kind. I was able to capture with my camera, two other species of birds of prey.
Nikon D70, Sigma 400mm f5.6 w/ 2x extender
Thanks for looking, Dan
