Description

One of two famous Egyptian sphinxes which are about three and a half thousand years old. Once they stood at the entrance to the temple built near Thebes, Egypt's ancient capital, for Pharaoh Amenhotep III whose countenance is perpetuated in these statues. The sphinxes were purchased in 1832 and taken to St. Petersburg on board a chartered ship. It was far from being a light job, for each sphinx weighed 23 tons. The voyage from the banks of the Nile to the Neva pier lasted a whole year. Thanks for viewing. Olympus 5050.
