Description

This is a hummingbird moth. They actually hover as they nectar just like hummingbirds, thus the name. And they are day-fliers. Not the greatest technical shot because of the motion blur, which I goofed on the camera settings a little. I also should have used continuous shooting/burst mode. (next time!) For anyone wanting to know - trick to do this is high speed shutter and lots of sun! You want a nice colored background and ambient light, so shoot in the direct sunlight. Then put the shutter at 1/1250 of a second, iso 400 and f 7. You can up the shutter but you'll need to lower the F stop, or increase ISO but I don't like going over 400. Thanks for viewing and enjoy!

Excellent work- thanks for the information on shooting this shot. I am quite inexperienced with my new camera and like to read tips and methods from others.

A little bit blurry but a great capture. I know he wasn't sitting there posing for you... LOL. I really enjoy all of your bug shots and info. What kind of camera and lense are you shooting with?

Pretty amazing shot. I should be so lucky as to get this good a focus on a flying critter. The first time I ever saw one of these moths I was blown away. They are really beautiful and they really do resemble a Hummingbird. I think you did a great job with this capture.
