Description

Glasswing Butterfly As delicate as finely blown glass, the presence of this rare tropical gem is used by rainforest ecologists as an indication of high habitat quality and its demise alerts them of ecological change. Rivaling the refined beauty of a stained glass window, the translucent wings of the glasswing butterfly shimmer in the sunlight like polished panes of turquoise, orange, green, and red. Looks right at home on this Bird of paradise flower! Thanks for looking and any comments

Talk about beam-splitting pellicles, hehe. Great and elegant lead and crystal design! With no "eyes" on the wings to be seen puzzling out the possible functions is interesting. Do they taste especially bad, for example, thus warning predators, including birds, away with obvious architectural and ecclesiastical allusions? Camouflage? Hmmm--do look a lot like several stinging insects.

Danob, outstanding shot. This reminds me of a sphinx moth I photographed last year..same clear wings but not the beauty of the butterfly. I have not seen one of these beauties until now. Thanks.

This is so beautiful, the colors and the composition, that it almost doesn't matter what creature you were capturing... I would even love it as much without the butterfly!;-) Wonderful shot!!
