Pyrochroa serraticornis ( Red-headed Cardinal Beetle )
Length 14mm
So-called because of scarlet colour of head, thorax and abdomen. Adults are seen from May till July and often found under flaking bark or in rotting timber; in sunny weather also visits flowers to hunt for small insects. Carnivorous larva lives in rotting wood.
