Description

Besides the abundance of flowers there are also other species, like this blooming toothwort (Lathraea squamaria), a parasite of many trees such as lime, poplar, sycamore, horse-chestnut, hazel, etc.. In the Netherlands this species is almost extinct but here I find several blooming flowers and I enjoy to find this little remarkable plant. The pale leaves contain no chlorophyll and the plant needs to obtain its energy from other resources than the sun. That's why they are parasites, they steal their nutrients from hosts like hazels. Beautiful colors and composition! Is Lathraea squamaria considered a saphrophyte, then? (Sorry, my botanical knowledge is pretty limited.)

Beautiful little flowers, but a shame that they are so hungry. Like so many things in life that take their strength from something else in order to exist. Beautiful photograph. HUGS!!!

Interesting commentary on these purple flowers. I like how the brown branches weave through your composition, as well as the green from the other plants and the lighter shades of old leaves! Nicely done :)

Interesting! Love the information you have added to the image. You are like the scientist of this group here on Rend. - giving us all the technical detail on the things we choose to shoot here... even if some of us can't be bothered to find the names ourselves... LOL (me for one!)
