Description

Aack! Slapped this on together as en entry for the "april Showers" contest ( assuming meteor showers are included ) and as a continuation of the "Annwn" story, but finished ( sort of - the "outfit" turned out a little loose in fit ) too late... again! Annwn woke suddenly... to the sound of a large and heavy something crashing to the ground... quite nearby! And if that, alone, wasn't rude enough for an unexpected awakening, the echoing thunderclap of it was playing itself out to the accompanyment of what sounded like an earthquake trying to out-devastate an avalanche! Her mind was hazy, and she felt as if she had been asleep for a hundred years. But even so, the memory of what had happened, and of what the outcome must have been was clear! There was simply no way that she could have survived that explosion, QLR assisted or not! Especially given that her invention, the Quantum Lifeforce Resonator, had malfunctioned only moments after she had activated the Stormsword's anti-particle projector. No sooner did the beam begin cutting it's way into the hull of the relentlessly advancing Othership than the QLR had unleashed an electric burst which might have killed her, had not it's function been designed to heal and sustain her life against the deadly radiation emissions of the Stormsword itself. Then the two devices had begun to interact. A wave of pure energy began pulsing back and forth between the QLR and the Stormsword, growing in force with each cycle, with Annwn still standing between. She could barely maintain her stance against the shock waves of pain, holding the Sword toward the sky screaming back at her. And the oblivious ship... which maintained it's seemingly single-minded course of speed and direction. And it's actions, apparently aimed at destroying as much of Annwn's world as possible. The ship's eight immense laser-turrets were pounding the countryside, destroying every structure in sight, while a swarm of the few remaining Imperial Fighters fired upon it's Drakanium reinforced hull with everything they had. Their diversionary tactic had worked! To the alien inhabitants of the Othership, Annwn's attempt to punch at least a small hole in it's underbelly must have seemed like an insect bite! But then the building tidal wave of energy had burst forth from the Stormsword, a dazzling helical beam of Elemental Force which cut into the ship like a white-hot knife slashing against a sheet of tissue-paper. The Othership swayed abruptly, visably shaking from an accelerating chain-reaction of internal explosions. On the verge of losing consciousness, Annwn's grip on the Sword had then slipped momentarily, allowing the beam to cut into the ship's engine section. And it had erupted... with all the violence of a long-smouldering volcano. For a moment, the Othership had trembled violently, it's Drakanium hull barely containing the mounting fury within. Then, all at once, the hull had shattered, and the cloud of metal fragments parted to unleash a white-hot fire that swallowed the sky before Annwn could draw another gasping breath. For her, silent black had stepped in an instant before the blinding white. And she had drifted... like the fluttering of wings, or as a breath of air shifting with the wind, her consciousness was swept along in the dark waters deep beneath the levels of dream.

And now she was here... impossibly here. Her body moved, against cold and numbness and she struggled to raise a hand, her right hand as her left was immobilized by stiffness, in order to push aside the sheet of paneling debris that covered her. Gripping her painfully stiff left shoulder, she finally could stand to look around herself, at a shattered countryside. Even with her vision blurred, the terrible devastation was easily seen... the sky was an ominous and swirling mass, darkened with dust and smoke, and fragments of the ship still rained from clouds of black... as they had been doing for days! Groundfires were everywhere, and huge indistinct shapes loomed among them. All at once her vision cleared, and the full force of reality thrust itself upon her. The ancient temple that had stood behind her was gone... the lake before her had been vaporized... and the nearby mountains had been flattened. Now the only recognizable shapes were the shattered and twisted remains of the Othership's massive Drakanium laser-gun turrets, lying scattered among the fires and rubble. Mounted, as they were, on the ends of the ship's spidery turret-arms, they had been blown free of the main mass. For a moment, Annwn had wondered if there could be survivors within those hulks, but the fires raging within them, whose heat she could now feel even from this distance, told her otherwise. Then that thought returned... she could not have survived this! Nothing could have survived this! She glanced down at herself, and with some sense of embarrasment, had discovered that her outer clothing was gone, and that healthy pink skin could be seen through the holes in the few tattered remains of the alloy-threaded bodysuit she had worn as added protection against the Stormsword's radiations. Could the QLR have sustained her... even through all of this? Could it have drawn sufficient added energy from the Stormsword's anomalous burst to have kept her alive and healing? Glancing around at the burnt ground, melted stones, and fused sands all around her, she searched for the device until she had spotted a fragment of red gemstone. Recognizing a piece of the QLR's quantum resonator, an integral component that had been mounted at the hard-wired version of the device's core, she realized that it had to have been destroyed. But then a glimmer of light had caught her attention out of the corner of one eye, and she looked to her left. There, with it's sharpened end lodged within an outcropping of cooling stone, was the hilt end of the Stormsword, still looking at bright, polished, and new as it probably looked on the day it was forged! Amazed, and forgetting herself, she lifted up her left arm toward it, in a reaching motion... and had seen, then, before her eyes the truths of the matter! The fingers of her left hand were still but charred bones, but life was returning to them as new muscle and flesh grew on and over them with impossible speed! Annwn realized that she had not survived her ordeal at all! The Lifeforce Energies of her world had seized upon an opportunity, and had struck down it's attackers with all of the raw elemental powers at their disposal by utilizing the QLR, the Stormsword, and even Annwn herself, as a conduit to channel their actions. And in the process, Annwn's own body had absorbed a great deal of that Energy. Now, as reward for her sacrifice, she had been granted a new life... and given the ability to regenerate on her own from any injury, no matter how severe. Every molecule of her body had been tuned for survival, and every particle of her being was now infused with the powers of the greatest blessing... immortality. No good deed ever goes unpunished! And so began Annwn's five-thousand year journey... down through the most tumultuous and chaotic periods of her world's long history.
