I like how it actually looks like a functional weapon, not just another sci-fi weapon.

Looks like some sweet firepower. You should be able to put some big and creative holes through things with that :)

Interesting....Haven't seen a design concept like this since the Calico Firearms came out in the late 80's. As I understand it their Helical Feed Mags tended to get a bit unreliable with repeated use.

oh,the magazine was reliable, even when stored with ammo for a longer periode of time, because the magazine spring could be "relaxed" when stored, and wound up with the build in crank when in use. the calico was intended for both Law Enforcement and Military markets (in either semi-auto or selective fired form, in 9mm), but the guns small caliber, and weight were main reasons for the US Law Enfocement and Military not to buy this weapon. Calico also built it for civilian market (semi-auto only, in pistol or carbine form, in 9mm and .22LR versions), and the US Assault Weapons Ban of 1994, which limited magazine capacity for civilian guns to 10 rounds, further impacted the future of this weapon. Apparently, military and police sales during late 1990s were insufficient, and it seems that the Calico LWS company went out of business. the bizon pp19 was another gun using this concept, and the soviet speznaz used it for a long time :p

A variation would be to put the firing mechanism way backwards, into the stock. Users of the FNPN90 have a hearing problem because of the rounds going off next to their ear. By elongating the stock you can hit three flies in one stone; (1) the weapon becomes more balanced (2) it holds more rounds (caseless rounds!) and (3) the action is more distanced from the ear. The above weapon would hold probablt around 50 rounds, even with casings, but a weapon with a really long helical mag would hold, what, 200+?

  1. no, takeshi takakura was responsible for the mechanical design of this gun. he put the magazine more to the front to act as a counterwheight, to compensate muzzleraising, its already well balanced. i got the joy to work with the 1:1 scale model of it. 2. the double stacked helical mag above is a bit longer as the calico 50 round helical magazine. this one holds 60-80 rounds depending on the 2 different caliber variants aviable of this gun, and it is already heavy enough (even with polymer casings- its supposed as SMG and not as a small caliber LMG). 3. special forces already using built in active ear protection in their helmets. like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009363P/103-9244408-6051807?v=glance&n=228013 thx for the constructive critic

Terrific concept; I always did like the Calico's design... glad to see you carry on that tradition!
