Description
A work in progress. Any comments or suggestions? Should I scrap the idea?

No ! dont stop. Not sure what you mean to to do with this, but it is well on its way to being a good'n. The first thing I would do is turn off the shadows. A little time in the texture editor should find you a nice transparent material for the disc. The disc could be made in the terrain editor with a greyscale pic of an old scientific instrument or something ? The background is great and I like the idea so far. Good luck !

Nice one. You should defenitly go on this way. Now for the comments you asked. I think some really soft shadows might look good. And if it doesn't look good you should just turn them of. If I remember correctly Uranus is green, but still with a bit of blue and it has very thin rings and a lot less than saturn too. And pluto is a double planet, it's moon (called charon if I remember correctly) is about 40% smaller than pluto and effects pluto's orbit so much that the specialists rather call this duo a double planet. I'v got a nice texture map for pluto if you'd like it I can e-mail it to you maybe with an artist-impression of how the two planets should look. Jupiter has some very small rings too and saturn has mor then 20 moons. Well thats all for the scientific corrections i can think of right now. To end this comment with a positive reaction: I really like the space background! I have tried for some time to make such nice space-stuff(but without succes), with what software have you made it? My rating for now: 8.5

Don't know that much about solarsystem like Rayraz, but I know it's a good idea don't scrap it !!

I love it. Keep at it. I disagree with two of the comments above with one variation. Keep the PLANET shadows there, but kill the shadow from the SUN. In fact crank up the light coming from the sun, maybe tone down the light from above.
