Archimedes, against an earlier Greek tradition that geometers not apply their studies to warfare, defended Syracuse, being besieged by the Romans, with various marvellous contrivances. The Roman soldier's geometry was much more blunt. So Archimedes becomes a modern martyr. The besieging Roman general, on the other hand, had given strict orders that Archimedes be taken alive--no doubt in anticipation of capturing Werner van Braun, hehe. "I just shoot them up, who cares where they come down--it's not my department, says...."
