Description

Anne Frank was a Jewish girl born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1929. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 her family had to flee to Holland. Her father Otto, a banker, opened a shop in Amsterdam; she and her sister went to school there and were educated in Dutch. The Netherlands was invaded by the Nazis in 1940. Soon Jewish families were picked off the streets and deported to concentration camps in Germany and Poland. The Franks, and another family (Otto's associate's) went into hiding in the back of an office building on 12th June 1942. Anne, 13, started a diary there. In it she describes life in her cramped surroundings, trivial occurences in what is known as the Achterhuis (the "back house") as well as Anne's reflections on the war (she listened to the BBC) and on life. They are the musings of an intelligent, sensitive young adolescent. In 1944 the occupants were betrayed (probably by a petty burglar) and arrested by the Gestapo. Anne, her sister and mother, as well as the other family, died in concentration camps. Anne died in early 1945, aged 15. Only Otto returned. He was persuaded to publish Anne's diary; it became a bestseller and was turned into theater plays and movies (including a recent movie starring Natalie Portman). I'm sure you will find an edition of The Diary of Anne Frank in every good bookstore. "Anne Frank's House" in Amsterdam, on the Prinsengracht, renovated on the outside but with the "back house" still as it used to be, is now a museum. (It is not permitted to take photographs inside.) It is a must see to every visitor of the city who loves freedom and opposes Fascism or any other kind of totalitarianism and race hatred.

unfortunately the US seems to be headed that way as almost every month another freedom is no longer so.one changed yesterday and we are headed for a police state, I am afraid. I always heard about Anne Franke's diary for many years and seen the movie. excellent historical capture and your explanation is superb

I have been inside this building, and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, having read Anne's Diaries and knowing alot about the history behind it all. You can't help but "feel" what they must have felt hiding away there. It's one thing to read about it, but quite another to see it with your own eyes. Thanks for taking and sharing this picture:-)
