Description

Friends & curiosity seekers, I haven't been creating or posting anything the last few weeks because I have been brooding about, contemplating, & grieving over the unexpected & shocking deaths of two people I knew - one by a heart attack at the age of 47 & the other by suicide at the age of 59. I usually don't discuss my personal life much here, but felt like sharing that for some reason. But please no pity or sympathy comments about that - "just the art, ma'am", as Joe Friday used to say (when he was an artist, before he became a detective)... This is a from above picture of a marigold in my vegetable garden that I took today. I haven't done anything to it except rotate it 90 degrees to make it look like a head on view. No cropping, no editing at all. I went ahead & worked on the picture some more in (Photoshop) & will post the result of that tomorrow, though probably in the mixed media gallery (since I can't really call it a photograph any more). It all got me thinking about how people react to & evaluate a piece of art (or even if they consider something a work of art at all). Does the amount of skill exhibited or time & effort spent working on a piece of art influence your reaction to it? Does it matter whether the image above is a photo or a painstakingly constructed painting? Don't images deserve to be appreciated directly for what they are & not through the filter of a rational analysis based on perceived worth? Just some random thoughts - I'd be interested in other points of view, if you've got the time or the interest...

I think all "art" is such, because it evokes an 'emotional' response and/or 'revelation', in absence of concious control..... I think that's what it's meant to do, if it succeeds, it can be art.... a thing of beauty is captured here.

"in the eyes of the beholder"...nice simple image and straight forward words! If I like someones artwork, no matter what the category or genre, I will comment on it in a positive manner. Negative feedback is simply that....Negative.

This rusty golden marigold seems to be floating along on a sea of green, supported perfectly by the earth tones!!! excellent shot!!!! I too, know very well the feelings you've expressed, the sudden and untimely deaths of close friends has hit me behind the knees too!!!!! I share your emotions...

Tough times lead to introspection. I evaluate this image primarily on the image itself, and party on the artists intent. How it makes me feel becomes more important than the artists intent. Wether 10 minutes or 10 months of work are spent on an image, it is how it hold up in the end that matters. Medium does not matter, though I think many have preferrences for certain types and predjudices against others. Time to see what you did with this natural mandala...
