Description
I'm kind of in the middle of doing a study of 3DS MAX materials and I wanted to get a realistic(ish) gold metal. I'd appreciate any comments.

Looks OK to me, but you should try to add some caustic if you want everything to be 'photorealistic'.

jundging by the shadow, you need highlights! and a better reflection, how bout a more detailed room with chairs cups and whatever or an environment map? lord of the rings?

Pureflesh, yeah, I did have some highlights and usually use them, but I had previously read a tutorial about realistic lighting by Neil Blevins (www.neilblevins.com) and he pointed out that real highlights are just reflections of light sources or bright surfaces (which I forgot to put into the scene, but did after the render). I will probably put up my actual render in a bit but I wat to fix up a few things first, like finish modeling an actual room. P.S: Yeah I did just see Lord of the Rings and am trying to create a ring with inscriptions on the outside and inside. Love that movie :)
