Description
She was 12 and I was 12 and she was the pretty Jewish girl a few desks away in Miss Romeo's English class. She was a naive bourgeois child and I was a tough street kid and she enjoyed my protection. She really didn't have much choice. She was a rare and delicate creature in a dangerous inner-city world.
How she came by the name of "Haven" I never learned...but it suited her much more than "Ethyl" or even "Joyce".
Four years later, after many disputes with her parents and mine, she was my date for the Junior Prom.
