Description

I imagine the weather's getting pretty nice right now back in Blighty, but here's one for those Aussies (and others) who are having to wrap up warm! We had our chimney swept the weekend before last so we can finally put our fire to use (including having an indoor barbie!) I found it a great subject for photography too and here are three selections from the dozens of shots I took a few days back. You just have to be aware of how hot the camera can get and try not to prolong its exposure to such heat! Photographed with Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital camera, each image rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise. The bottom one was given some colour correction to match the other two. Thanks for taking a look and your feedback is always much appreciated :-)

It was just the way these colours photographed. Only the bottom one was tweaked, the other two were completely 'as is'. The brightest embers are just too much of a fluorescent orange to reproduce accurately even on screen (let alone with litho print where you can just forget it if you don't use the hexachrome system) so they tend to come out as a deeper vibrant red or a very washed out reddish-orange. The CCD on the digicam tends to struggle with such colours, it seems :-)

Don't think I'd risk my Olympus this close to a fire like this! There's a real subterranean feel, as if you'd climbed inside a lava tube for a closer look. Genuinely hellish landscapes that stir the imagination. Verne's "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" was one of my childhood faves, btw. What was the white balance setting on your cam? (ps. No I haven't forgotten our project! I know you're keen to conclude it, but please allow me a bit more time playing :-) - plus my fave bookshop has the Beksinski on order... More stuff soon!)

I don't actually remember what the white balance setting is on my cam - probably just Auto blushes in embarrassment. I see what you mean about thinking Verne, that's the kind of scenario I was thinking too even if not specifically that author. And take as much time on our project as you need, no rush whatsoever ;-)

coolpix doubles as a hotpix deep from the burning depths of the world down under quite nicely ;]

The first photo had me doing a mental search to determine where the nearest volcanic activity to your present abode could be found. The third photo had me thinking of forest fires... aha - wrong season says I - before realising that, of course the camera deceives... Then the penny dropped. It's all a question of scale!!!
