Description

Photo of Fort Snelling Cemetary, Minneapolis, MN. This was taken a few steps left of my father-in-law's grave. We visited the grave and put flowers around him. I was in complete admiration of the ground's crew and the work they do as you can see in the photo. How would you like to mow or trim ALL DAY? Anyhow, as I looked upward at this scene, I started humming the first line of an old hymn, (On a hill far away stands an old rugged cross), which is the title of this photo. The song is called The Old Rugged Cross. Obviously, there is no cross to view here, but rather the symbolism of the crosses we all must bear in our lives. I believe that some of the men that are buried in this cemetary, along with their families, would appreciate the poetic refrain of the song pasted below. So I

What a beautiful cemetery. I love cemetaries that have the same shaped gravestones like this one. It looks so elegant. A very beautiful photo Jodie, with perfect colors. Have a wonderful weekend. #:O)

Great shot and fully understand the sentiment, as too many of the men in my family are buried in such cemetaries. Personally I don't find military cemetaries as either elegant or a thing to love, but a sad and terrible place. Have a good 4th.

The framing, the cant of the horizon, the single rift of flowers, all speak so powerfully. This is a touching image in and of itself, and made all the more poignant by the beautiful intro.

I think it's important for us to remember that many gave the supreme sacrifice (and are still doing so today), so that we may have Liberty and Justice. We Americans owe a debt to your father-in-law, and the many others like him. A moving photograph, Jodie.

I find these places so impressive (we have countless of them here in Flanders fields), but at least they are honored; and I can't help but think about the many millions more that die through conflicts, neglect or poverty at the same time, without honor, care or love... Anyway, you made a very beautiful photo here... impressive and thougtfull!

This looks like a celebration of the sacrifice these people made - the attention to the grounds, the clean unbroken headstones, regimented as were the people they mark. The sadness is that since these people died in a war not of their making, not of their choice, we have learnt nothing and have not moved on. War is still happening, death is a given. Another powerful story, Jodie.

Very moving. I love the emotion felt at cemeteries, and the difference between military and non-military cemeteries. Ive spent many hours shooting both. Beautiful shot.
