Description
This is the Graslei ("Grass Bank" of the River Lys) for real, taken this morning on a hot summer day.
In the early 14th century merchants from all over Europe would come and offer their wares - cotton, grain, whatever. Ghent was a sea-port then, before "th'offscouring of the British sand" clogged it up (like it did Bruges).
Nowadays Ghent is a thriving city and once again a seaport, with lots of its historical buildings still intact and regularly renovated. Lying inbetween Bruges and Antwerp (c. 30 miles on each side) it offers history to tourists and commerce and centers for conventions like a modern city.
(By the way, the above quote is from Andrew Marvell.)

I like the mood and architecture. Ironically, in this era of digital art, the staircase edges of the front walls look like pixels.
