Description

MacFormat magazine (http://www.macformat.co.uk/) commissioned me to conceptualise a future iMac to accompany a related article. I based the design on current Apple design trends, as well as the previous iMac incarnation (which is my favourite). The iMac features a 30" utra-thin LCD screen, which is totally transparent when the iMac is not in use. The screen can also be set to various levels of translucency, and can fade during sleep modes etc. The keyboard is also totally tramsparent, low profile and a curved ergonomic design, with light sensitive illuminated keys. Everything is of course, wireless. :) Cheers

Ok - I definately got the bend on the ergo-keyboard the wrong way around! - noted for future endeavours! :)

Nice rendering and modelling work, but the actual design for the computer would require some work. The screen looks too wide in correlation to the base. Makes it look wobbly and fat. The speakers are too short, they're not proportinal to the rest of the computer. The whole concept looks more Bang&Olufsen than Apple. Flashy, not understated enough. I do not know what your brief for this project was, but the rendering/modelling is welldone, but the actual design is something that 2nd year industrial design student would produce when doing an Apple product mockup. Ps. Decided not to mention the keyboard again, oops I did it again!

Sorry for the shameless plug, but if you want to see Adam's work in print and read all about the 'Macs of Tomorrow', check out the latest issue of MacFormat magazine which is on sale now at all good newsagents!! It looks like your pictures are going down well Adam, thanks again for all your hard work in putting them together for us. Alex (Art Editor, MacFormat)

The image itself looks quite pretty but the concept sucks at the major points: 1. Why should i need transparency when i have a clamp like this in the background? Going into the edges would solve this. 2. The ergonomic keyboard is the opposit if ergonomic as discussed above. 3. The speakers are way to small to give full sound back. 4. Glass and chrome are a some kind of lame materials to express a futuristic look. 5. Your display-technique seams not to work for me. Where is the light coming from? What makes the pixels dark (= no light, dark background)? And if you say "We're in the future where this has been solved" then I have to ask you, Do you really think that we will stick to the same in- and output prinziples the next decades? Why do you stick to mouse and keyboard when multi-input touchscreens are yet reality? Why would we use a altered kind of display when 2D or even 3D projection is so close today? And do you think that an fixed workspace is still the future of computing? All together, your artwork is still an nice and easy illustration but not an "concept". Maybe next time you should take yourself a little bit more than 15 hours to think about what you want to do. Cheers

Thanks for your 'critique' joachim, but maybe you missed the point entirely!? - either way, it was a commission to create a iMac of the near future based on current Apple design trends, and to that ends, it was exactly what was required by the client!. It also seems to have been highly regarded by many Mac and/or concept design folk across the world (google it), and has been now included in several such printed publications on the subject of future/conceptual design - which despite the 'flaws' is rather nice, given that I am an illustrator, and don't profess any particular leaning towards 'real' industrial design. :)

Very impressive concept and a gorgeous design.I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it becomes a reality.Congratulations!

It wouldn't be practical for everyone, but that's not the point. It is extremely cool and makes one wonder what else is possible. I have to chime in about the non-ergonomic keyboard, though. I have a Microsoft Natural keyboard and it's probably the best thing that company has ever made. If you want to do something serious with ergonomic keyboards, most are very ugly. You might use a projection keyboard instead: http://new-keyboards.blogspot.com/2006/08/projection-keyboard.html Steven

Amazing design and 3D!!! The only thing is that Apple would have to put in an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display. These don't require a backlight, but LCD's do, which make it impossible to make them translucent. OLEDs are made from tiny organic particles that light up a certain color when a charge is sent through them, and there is no need for a backlight. Other than that, this design is completely possible. GREAT JOB!!!!

Excellent piece of design! My only concern is about the stability of the display's piedestal. It looks too weak and small.

The very beautiful and very interesting image of engineering! I too like to represent engineering!

The keyboard is "anti-ergonomic" in that it is bowed the wrong way to compliment humans taller than 1 foot. Ergonomic keyboards bow out toward the user's elbows, from whence come the hands. This concept is beautiful and well-made.
