Description

After 3 weeks holiday in Ireland I thought you may like to see some of my images.. It was a wonderfully relaxed place to visit I covered most of Ireland travelling close to 3000 miles!! I will try and show you some of the sights and share some of the history I discovered.. I based myself in County Mayo and it is from here I start.. Westport is unusual in Ireland in that it is a planned town. The original village of Cathair na Mart was moved to its present site in the 1780s by the Browne family. The town was laid out by James Wyatt, a famous English architect. He also completed Westport House, the stately home of the Marquess of Sligo and designed the dining room. Westport House had originally been built by Richard Cassels, the German architect, in the 1730s, on the original O' Malley Castle. (A pirate Queen) The dungeons of the O' Malley castle still remain. I show here The most notable feature of James Wyatt's plan is the lovely tree-lined boulevard, the Mall, built on the River Carrowbeg.

Nice to see you uploading photos, Danny.... and nice that you included some history of the place. I've been away from 'R' for quite some time and I haven't uploaded in ages. Maybe one day I'll get back to it. Let's see more vacation photos. Best regards, Tim

Sounds like you had a marvelous vacation. Looking forward to all the pics you plan on sharing. This is a lovely village/town. I like the hanging flower containers on the bridge. I enjoy reading the history of the things you see. Thanks.

Lovely way to start with images from your tour. Conjours thoughts of fresh caught food and the proper 'black stuff'!

I also added Ireland years ago on my to do list.. the big blue sea prevented me from going there.. Highly expensive to go there (with a car).. The bridge appears to be from long ago. It is the style in which bridges are built thousands of years.. Very scenic image.

Ciao Danny !!!! Nice to see you back ! Ireland must be a wonderful country, with an incredible and wild Nature. We have thought several times to go there with Giancarlo, he dreamed to go fishing in Ireland... I hope one day I could go there. The Celtic culture has always interested me, and I'm in love with the landscapes of this country of course. Interesting story about this place. In Brittany in France, there is also some towns where the harbour is inside the city. I love the colors of this shot, so quiet place. Have a peaceful week-end my friend, I'm waiting your photographs of Ireland too ! Hugs

It is odd how a tree-lined street sprouts black and while striped poles like a canal in Venice. Perhaps it is the weired river that the man is sweeping that has caused this cultural shift.

Very nice Dan! I guess that fella is clearing blockages or debris or rubbish from the river. Looks like you had some good weather :-)

Yes all the local towns and villages were preparing for the best presented one.. I was surprised to see how keenly this was contested, with some plants disappearing mysteriously!
