Description

The Caracal, also called Persian lynx or African lynx (Caracal caracal, sometimes Felis caracal), is a fiercely territorial medium-sized cat. Caracals are labeled as small cats, but are the heaviest of all small cats, as well as the fastest. Males typically weigh about 28-40 lbs, while females are smaller. The Caracal resembles a lynx and for a long time it was considered a close relative of the lynxes. Recent DNA research, however, has shown that the Caracal is not a close relative of lynxes at all, but is instead related to the Serval (source Wikipedia)

Just perfect -- makes me think of family, close friends and comraderie. It doesn't hurt that the looks on their faces remind me of an enormous cat that bites my feet.

a smashing shot ! i didnt know about the serval relationship, but both species are long-legged animals of open country, so it makes sense. it is from the Caracal's ability to leap and snatch birds out of the air that the expression 'to put a cat amongst the pigeons' comes. the Turks would release pigeons in front of a pet Caracal and bet on how many birds it would catch. i think the name itself is Turkish, 'black tip', or something ?
