The composition, depth of field and the light are excellent! Wonderful colors too. Now if you could get the focus right... I guess it's just practice. And a steady hand or tripod maybe. Or a smaller aperture...

Nice shot - superb colour and composition. It is a little soft as you realise. Shooting these takes lots of practise but I'll say a bit on what I would do and hope it helps. Firstly you need to get the shutter speed right. With a 300m lens the minimum you could hope to handhold would be 1/300th sec and that is with steady hands, better to have 1/400 or more. If your view in the viewfinder was sharp then that is the only problem. However as you have found out the dof is very small on these lenses when a subject is close. A good place to aim at would be to have an aperture setting of F10 or more to get the whole of the butterfly in focus and the background nicely blurred. To get these settings you will need to up the ISO to get the right exposure. For my shots I shoot in shutter priority so would set 1/350th in as my shutter speed then point the lens at a green leaf (in the same light) and look to see what the aperture value would be if I were to take the shot. It may say F8, I then would set my ISO higher, increasing it a step at a time till I got F10 which is my target. I then know to leave my camera at this ISO setting and look for the butterfly to take pics knowing my exposure and dof will be right when I do, no need to worry about settings when you are trying to get the shot. As you rightly say there is no time to set up tripods and worry about settings etc when taking pics like this the butterfly will have gone. These are my basic settings and of course you can vary these ideas to suit your own style but they will give you sharp usable pics and then you can work from there.
