Description

My goal for this image was not an elaborate scene, but simply to try to ascertain whether I could truly achieve more photo-realistic results with Blender/Yafray than I have been getting with Bryce 5.5. The objects are the same ones which I created in Wings3D for my earlier chess image. Thanks very much for taking a look, and please let me know what you think about the render. Thanks! such a simple seen yet such beauty. blender+yafray has great potential, however getting satasfactory results in the first few renders is rare. it seems that this picture is in a way grainy. i have no idea what could cause this and have never seen this before. the white chess peice you might want to make a bit whiter and add a blin shadder and the black chess peice you might want to make a bit more reflective. you should make a checkerboard for the floor (its not actualy that hard) and either make not reflective at all, or completely reflective. just remember, BLENDER ROCKS

Thanks very much for the tips, oodmb. I confess it was quite a stuggle to get even a halfway decent render considering the non-standard interface. I'm pretty excited about the potential in YafRay, though. My best guess on the graininess is that i used a fairly large area lamp, with about 7 samplings for the shadows, which helped to render the soft shadows, and the slight graininess from the soft shadows reflected from the floor back onto the white king. Could easily be wrong, since I'm just starting to explore Blender/YafRay. I used both the GI and HDRI features, and let it render while I went to church Sunday morning... I don't remember the exact render time, but it was at least an hour or so. The only postwork was to crop and increase the brightness about 10%.
