Description

One of the benefits of unemployment is having the time to work on projects one had put off. In this case, the project was converting my two Sanyo VPC digital cameras into a stereo camera. The method was simple-- a tripod, a 30" piece of wood, a few holes, and some bolts. Mount the board on the tripod, then screw the two cameras onto the board. I can trigger the camera by hand, pressing both shutter buttons at the same time (hopefully), or set both cameras self-timers (to prevent camera shake). I went around town looking for images to stereo-ize. Then back to the HP to link the appropriate pairs up. In this case, the right eye image is on the left. To view, make sure the image is at a size you can easily take in without having to pan your eyes. Let your eyes relax and cross a little. The two images merge to create a third. Move your eyes a little to snap this third image into clarity. (It's hard to describe the technique. Either you can do or you can't.) Anyway, here's a section of the woods near my house, on the edge of a gully. Focus on the scarred tree to make the 3D image appear.

Well, how about "real" subjects in 3D? Stereoscopic photography works well, I did some myself a decade or so ago. Notice how the perception of depth is exaggerated because the distance between the two lenses is greater than the distance between our two eyes! Thanks for sharing :-)

Wonderful experiment, and with a great result. This wood is so beautiful and peaceful. You've got it near your house ? lucky man ! I hope to see other of your works of this technique.

A "naked wood nymph" would have really brought this image to life...not a criticism...just an observation. Excellent job!!!
