In all probability, it was the lack of any serious ideological difference between the Zemanova and Halsey camps that did it. With one leading male candidate and one leading female and everyone else nowhere, the New Falkland election campaign became, in some quarters, a battle of the sexes, even though neither Halsey nor Zemanova encouraged such an attitude. With the votes counted, Halsey was declared a narrow winner. New Falkland's permanent defences are all off-planet, but planetside defence is in the hands of a part-time force called the Planetary Guard. Falklanders awoke, the day after the result, to find female units of the PG occupying strategically significant locations all over the planet. They were refusing to accept the legality of the election result. Although the women of the Guard were heavily armed, there was no violence. Confrontation was deliberately avoided and all protest was polite and good-natured. Zemanova finally defused the situation by emphatically declaring that she stood by the election result (a rigorously supervised re-count showed that the original result had been correct all along). The "One-Day Coup" melted away, President Halsey declaring a blanket amnesty to all involved. Three years later, he was decisively re-elected, although Valentina Zemanova finally got her chance at the election after that. The Planetary Guard has never since interfered directly in New Falkland politics. Two Stonemason models in this one.
