Description

This is a gargoyle in the doorway of our parish church.Probably modelled on the facial features of someone known to the stone mason at that time..... both now long departed.Watching over the comings and goings of the living. A reminder of the brevity of life and our own mortality.

I wouldn't say this is a gargoyle. This photo is more of a worshipper, a sculpture of beauty, it's just beautiful. I was looking in my dictionary...a gargoyle is statue of grotesque figure: a grotesque carved figure

Your church sounds like it was constructed several centuries ago. The statue has probably witnessed countless marriages and funerals. I wonder if the sculpter thought of this as he worked.
