Description
There's always room for
Hyper-Jello with Brittle Star and Succulent Garnish!
... mmm, Yummy!
No matter that it's 100% poisonous.
It all started with wanting to make a restaurant scene.
I had seen some excellent examples of these in the supplement to a recent issue of 3D World magazine.
The important steps (I made several missteps!) were:
1
Create the place-setting
In browser,
Google research to find place setting layouts
Go to your silverware and place mats collection.
Get silverware and a place mat, make an inverted setting layout on the scanner bed.
Import a scan as a PhotoShop image. Discover that separate scans are needed.
Import scan of silverware.
Import scan of one corner (~1/4) of place mat.
Import scan of napkin.
Open scans in PhotoShop. Clean them up!
Using PhotoShop tools, make a color image and mask for each of the scans and save as PICT images.
Make and save a composite grayscale image for use as a depth map.
2
In Bryce:
Create a terrain object,
click on Edit,
set the resolution to 1024x1024,
load the composite grayscale depth image.
Set the blending to 100% to start.
Make the image serve as a mask,
by clicking on the menu icon and adjusting the mask depth. T
he red parts are then transparent.
Make a test render.
Select the terrain object again and then
click on the "M(aterials)" tab.
Set the material to "Simple and Fast:White",
set the Ambiance to zero, click on the "P(ict)" tab,
and on the upper right, the "Load" tab.
Load the corresponging masked color image.
Make a test render.
Piece by piece, load the wall, the chairs, the plants (made earlier),
the glassware for one table.
Make a group of the best arrangement and duplicate (flipped Z), to make a pair of facing tables.
Delete duplicate items.
Make a test render, make a test depth render.
Tighten up tolerances and
repeat.
3
Make a final render at full resolution:
set the File: Document Setup: Document Resolution: to 1600x1200 and
render once more.

Is that all you did to make the pic? You started before breakfast, and were done before heading off to work, right? Maybe "step-by-step" would be a more accurate genre description. I like the glass-panel walls that aren't quite parallel, and the duplicate reflections they make. But that flatware looks so - flat. Maybe that's intentional, so that it stacks and stores more efficiently. But if you drop it on that floor, it'll disappear through those cracks.

Mmmhhhh - very tasty... :)
