Description

The Museum of the Pacific War (aka The Nimitz Museum) in Fredericksburg, TX has a wide variety of World War II equipment and artifacts. This Japanese Navy Aichi D3A (Type 99) dive bomber survived as wreckage. It was the standard carrier dive bomber at the beginning of the war and took part in the carrier actions from 1941 to 1943. They were also used from land bases and finished out the war in the "kamikaze" role during 1944-45. Max. speed was around 250 mph, and it carried a variety of bombs, but most frequently a 250 kg (550 lbs) was it's Sunday punch. There were two 7.7mm machine guns in the wings and one for defense in the rear cockpit. The Allied code name for this plane was "Val."

Certainly an eye opener. History and these relics really helps us to understand more about the human nature of war and destruction. Great photo! HUGS!!

Nice shot! That one has seen some weathering though there is plenty there to do a restoration from. I saw a P-39 at Planes of Fame at Chino slated for restoration that looked as though it had been crushed between two plates. There Dauntless, recently completed started like this about 6 years ago. We can hope that this too will take wing again, but not in anger.
