Description
I've got a problem with the global scale of this render. The foreground rocks seems to be a part of a big canyon, but the pool of water looks small. All your suggestions are welcome to improve this picture !

Could be a big lake, too. Once you start looking with "scale" glasses anything can be seen at any scale! Outstanding piece of work, nevertheless, excellently detailed!

Dont think that the lake is too small!Wonderful terrain and surface!! Very beautiful work!!!

I agree with Coppens. Same problem when you paint on a canvas: tired, you don't see anything. Let your image rest some time and look at it later. Once. Later. Once again... It takes days. I'm just a beginner in 3D but I suppose we all work too fast. We should wait, come later, come again... till we are almost satisfied. Maybe I'm completely wrong? Your image makes me thirsty! (but I like it!)

I have been back to look at this three times now to try and see what you were talking about I think the scale is just fine, Don't change a thing.I think this is just wonderful the way it is. :)

Huhu and WOw!

Amazing terrain and surface, very detailed!!! I do see what you mean about the sense of scale, maybe you could postowrk a small person in the render to relieve this issue. ;) Honestly, I think if you lowered the camera height and widened the view it would give a better sense of scale. But other than that, I have no idea. Its still a fantastically detailed render!!!

nico3333fr
Tr bonne rssite technique ! Jolie rlisation !

You could lower the camera height, but then those gullies would begin to look like canyons. I haven't yet figured out how to make WM do narrow channels. But I'd agree that this is a splendid image all the same!

First of all, great terrain and surface map...very convincing! I think that your scale problem comes from the transparency depth of the water. If the terrain surrounding the water are to be large canyon type features then from the implied viewing distance we would not see that deep into the water, plus the subsurface details would not be that clear. Basically, it's the detail below the shallow water that makes it look like the viewer is about 20 feet away. That's my two cents...great shot though!

I agree with Domi48. Great work here, i love your surface-coloring!

Gorgeous...Could be a photograph.

I agree with wholehog. I think it's the water that's the problem. If you could give the water some very slight roughness, reduce the transparency to just the edge of the water and add a small wave breaking very close to the shore (Sorta Surf Multi plugin), it will give the illusion that it is a large body of water. The key is for the waves to look very small and very close to shore. My 3 cents!

i like a lot this one! for the sense of scale may be a lower pov and a target with positive pitch could improve, if you cover the frontside part until the begin of the water with the hand scale is very ok imho!

A lot of the above suggestions make sense; additionally, you might include some haze in the distance. This always helps to create depth. As is, your hard work on this one shows through; it is a beautiful image with tendencies towards realism!

Wow, the Surface is almost perfect. I love this Terrain! Great render.

I won't suggest, becaue I don't know my right foot from my left..and you've already received some what sounds like good tips. I will say your detailed and massive terrain is AWEsome, and the surface is superb.

I think Rich2 and rsmseymour have the right idea. The problem with scale on a landscape is that you have to have something to compare. Foreground objects are usually the reference and your image is lacking this. As Rich2 said, lowering the camera will help. That said, Ithimk this image works as a "small" canyon because there is no haze in the distance. Great texturing btw.

I think all the great advise overshadows the artwork...and for that you have produced a masterpiece!
WeeLaddie
I sometimes include post figures/props to help define scale. In this wonderfully surfaced scene I personally don't see a problem with scale; I see nicely textured rocks in the foreground, not canyons.
christianfly
Belles surfaces.

I think that this is really a great render. Fantastic with the small muddy pool in the middle. But maybe if a suggestion is what u want to make u happier -- u could use the tool for water/subsurface, and choose a darker diffuse color (chocolate brown) and for the transparency color choose (pale orange) and set the transparency to half the distance or 3/4rth of its actual depth. Nevertheless I like the pic as it is, we're having rains in India now! And this is just what I see in the vilage countryside :)
Markal
I agree with WeeLaddie...its a wonderful render no mater what the scale!!

doneydonydone
i think if the lake was smaller then the scale might fit better - also if you added a few more waves then it would seem as if we were looking at it from further away - water nmight be too transparent too! oh but by the way its an excellent image - great textures!!
ppetersen
I love it though... perhaps the scale seems wrong to you, but that 'muddy' pool gives this a perfect touch. Outstanding surfacing, pov and water...
