Description

G'day. This is the Lyre Bird (male) who is one of Australia's National Emblems and which is on our 10 cent coin. It is native to Australia dand mainly inhabits the denser forests of New South Wales and Victoria. They are generally a solitary species that can fly but prefers to spend most of their time on the ground scratching around for insects/bugs. They are not migratory birds and are found no where else in the world. The male is the one that makes alot of noise and copies the sounds of other birds (and also copies camera shutter noises and chainsaws too!!) - (almost too perfectly). Its bird calling (of other species) is so accurate that it often attracts the other birds (of the other species it copies) seeking to fight with a competitor. It is quite latrge with a body of 45 to 55 cm and the tail span of around 1m. This one was taken on its display nest at Cathederal Range (120km north east of Melbourne)(it was dark and i took the shot hand held with flash). This spot has lots of bush walkers so these birds have become quite tame. I walked to within about 4 metres of it. For those that missed out ... yesterdays upload was of the female. Enjoy Lou
