I remember going into Greece from Yugoslavia (yes, a long time ago) and seeing all of the telegraph poles with storks on. There weren't any nests, because the birds were migrating. This would have been mid-August, I should think, but I suppose that storks need to fly while there are thermal currents available to help them on their way. I think that they fly a bit like vultures. They are very evocative birds and it's a shame we don't get them where I am (England).
