Painting planes... This is not a render it's a painting and a screen dump from Flight Simulator 2002. Somebody asked me to make him this plane. That's not metal it's just a painting of metal. Best I can get it. It's perfect in true color but Flight simulator only can handle 256 colors.

Hey Pete, this is a great plane... Looks like a model, even though I know it's a painting.. Very realistic...

Mann!!!...Pete, you should mention how this is done here. It hell of a KOOL the way this final image comes about. Really cool technique and the skill display behind it :)

What has this to do with Vue? Well I'll tell ya a secret. I took a cylinder and flattened it ever so slightly and give it the aluminum texture then rendered it in Vue 512 X 4096. Then I painted the texture of the plane on top of that. Now the picture that is posted is my painting of the plane textures stretched over the plane mesh. It's basically a game man there is no rendering. It's just a picture that gives the illusion that it is rendered but if you look at other peoples planes well they're all flat just like you would expect if you painted a plane solid colors. So the moral of the story is you can still make it look real 3d and real metal with a bit of work. I've made 4 so far. Ok and it's got lights too all painted on that look like they work. I'll post more pictures in the next few days. One plane consists of 62 512 X 512 textures. Both night and day with lights and without. I never made the mesh. I can't seem to open the *.mdl file with any program I have here so I made a black and white grid texture and mapped it on then took screen shots of it to see how it all lines up then I used those pictures to adjust my art to make it all fit. Cool ay?
