Everything was created in Bryce 5.5 except for the orb's base (modeled in XFrog).

Well done!! The 'tendrils' are impressive! As a suggestion - where you've used a foliage texture in the background, perhaps you could make this real foliage (using trees from the tree lab) instead to give more of a sense of depth to the background? A very interesting scene!
