Description

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple A poem by Jenny Joseph With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick the flowers in other people's gardens, but maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple. I made this doll in honor of the above poem because Miss Jenny Joseph, the author of the poem, was making a one time tour of the West Coast of the U.S.A. Miss Joseph gave a reading of her poems at Powells Bookstore in Portland, Oregon. The "Purple Pin" on the sculpture was given to me by Miss Joseph and that night she also signed the Doll Certificate, making this one of my treasured creations. Great combination of items and poetry. Creates a vivid tableau and you bring back memories: Powells! What a place to get lost in! and an art contest in the museum at PSU. The winning entry was: Joy wears Purple Shoes. Not a great item IMO, but the usual and rotating exhibits were definitely worth a stop.
