Description

One of a few china sets I've made in Lightwave. With this scene I tried to match a photo on a advertising booklet.

Nice. Maybe you could add a subtle grunge map to 'dirty up' the scene and tone down the spec..? Good lighting as well.

some radiosity will give you some nice bounce color on the bottoms of the objects. also...is there an image world image in there? That would help too..all easy things to do with great pay offs!

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I played around with radiosity, but it didn't quite give the results I wanted, not to mention the render times. I placed a few lights to light up the scene, but I agree a little more bottom lighting would help - yes, the original photo definitely has more light. And I agree with cshark that the speculars should be softened too. As for spherical maps, I did a few scenes with my other china sets using those, here I used some high luminosity objects + raytraced reflections. I thought it looked more like the original, which was a presentational photo, so naturally not very "realisitic" in the conventional sense (so I didn't have to use any dirt maps, and the setting is quite artificial). Anyway, thanks for the comments and suggestions. By the way, does anyone know how to make nice renders with radiosity without getting a lot of "grain"? "Shading noise reduction" option helps but isn't always sufficient not to make the pic look "dirty", and "rays per evaluation" setting... well, it usually has to be VERY HIGH to make the pic look really good.

Looks great, Pablo108! To brighten the scene I would add a large AreaLight above your objects. This will result in smooth shadows (if its large enough).

Great work, but the shadow seems a bit grainy.

Yeah, I used high-jitter shadow map. The problem with the much nicer area light shadows, apart from longer render times, is that there is considerable jitter too, even at high settings. To be honest, I haven't really worked out how to make really nice soft smooth shadows in LW, sometimes shadow maps look OK, but not always, of course the best results are with radiosity, but that's not always the best option for other reasons. I'm working on an improved version of this image, see how much I can get better...
