Description
Gooner passed away recently. He died from the heat. He was a 70 pound mastiff puppy. I rescued him and his sister when they were abandoned next door to my house out in the country.
He was a wonderful dog. He was handsome and very smart. I was a little afraid that he might get a little aggressive. He would growl at me and nip at me sometimes on our daily walks. Then one day I let him out the back door just before we went on a walk and he ran off. I went around to the front of the house and there he was with 2 little kids. They were visiting my neighbor. There is only one other family out here for hundreds of yards in any direction.
The little kids said that he had brought them home with him. Then he laid down on the front porch and the kids laid down with him and put their heads on his belly like a pillow and started laughing and tickling him. He just laid there and licked them and poked them with his nose. I never worried about him being aggressive again. He could be when there were people that shouldn't be there but he was gentle as a lamb around kids.
It's my fault that he died. He got into some onions that were growing wild by his dog house. It was 107 degrees. He went into a garage near by, laid down peacefully on the concrete floor and quietly died.
I had no idea that could happen. He had a dog house, he had water, he had shade... It was suggested that he might have had a bad heart but I don't really know. My son and I buried him in a small pet cemetery on the other side of a hedge row behind my house. He was a big dog and it's been very hot and dry. The ground was very hard.
He was such a good dog. I should have know better.
What has this picture to do with Gooner? Nothing. It's more about how I feel about the loss, the blue of sadness.
Thanks for looking and reading my rant...

I'm sorry for your loss. We have a mastiff too, and only recently I found out onions and chocolate are poisonous to dogs, and have had to be vigilant ever since for our big girl. My heart goes out to you.
