Description

Did this in trueSpace 5.2 with lense flares and depth of field. This is one of a series of images [about 40] I did to accompany a scifi short story I wrote. Background sotry = Ground Force Descent: Major Mark Roland, Commander of 1st Dragoon Platoon, Task Force One, Hegemony Ground Assault Forces, assigned to NC-283rd on the 'Ground Pounders' 1Dp, la-DS.2d - Light Assault Drop Ship en route to planet for shuttle retrieval.

Ah yes - I remember seeing this picture developing back when your name was.... something else! I like it a lot. I'm in two minds about the Depth Of Field though. On the plus side it helps to visually isolate the action of the troops leaving the lander which might otherwise get lost amongst all the background action. On the minus side it obscures detail in the background. Additionally true photographic DOF follows specific patterns due to the design of film cameras and lenses (to do with the size of the lens aperture and the focus). Your depth of feild looks (to my eye anyway) unnatural. The changes of focus over distance don't quite correspond to what you would expect from a real-world camera. The result makes yopur picture look a little like a model on a table rather than a more 'realistic' scene. I recommend that you Google Depth Of Field and find a picture that exhibits DOF at the same scale you are looking for and try to match that. Or not! The picture is great IMHO - the ex-photographer in me always notices when DOF is'nt quite right so feel free to ignore everything I've said. Good work.

Thanks for all the comments guys, really appreciate it... Hey WZRD, I do agree with the depth of field comment you made and it makes sense. I will play around with the settings some more but have to be carefull to keep the focus on the center dropship with the soldiers being deployed because this is the key point of this part of the short story. Perhaps if it is taken in context with the story board, it might make more sense to have the intense depth of field setting. Besides that, there are a whole series of shots fo all the other activities and units around the focal point that has not been posted in the story either, I will post those for refence later or it can be view on the story site at http://www.cruzader.0catch.com/siss-lander.htm The story is complete but the image design has lagged behind a bit. I need to finish off the final images and post them with the story to complete the project. Just haven't gotten around to it yet... its been a more than year since the last update [can't believe it went by that quickly] but I have renewed my interest in the story and hence the images as well so want to make a new effort to get this done... Will post more images later...
