Description

One of the things I've always wanted to be able to do is those long exposure shots of water. It turns the flow into torrents of cotton. You know what I mean, you've all seen them. My S5000 isn't able to get a small enough aperture to be able to increase the shutter speed to be able to do this. Now I have a Rebel, I can get my f-stop up a lot higher. So I went to take a photo of a waterfall. not an easy thing in Indiana. This is Cataract Falls on Mill Creek. i took a lot of shots and still the aperture wasn't small enough. So this effect is close to what I want, but not quite. I need to get an ND filter and try again. This shot was actually over exposed, but had the nicest view of the water. Since it was RAW, I was able to adjust the exposure in postwork. It's still slightly washed out, but check HERE for the unaltered shot. Thanks for looking.

Still turned out quite well, got a good amount of streaming without losing the depth in color.

Actually, it's very, very good. If this is your first attempt, then you're going to be a master very soon. I'm not so sure about an ND filter - the problem is the severe contrast between the reflective water and the dark surroundings. An ND filter cuts down on light, but the messy contrast issue still remains. Lori and I try to shoot early in the morning or on overcast days. Some people take several shots, then layer in photoshop to get correct exposure levels across the scene. That's too advance for me though, I enjoy visiting waterfalls and if I do get a good shot, so much the better. Love this shot - awesome work!!!
