Description

Modeled and rendered in LightWave. Textures are a combination of original digital images and procedural textures. Everyone knows I am horrid at organic modeling, but that doesn't really stop me from making the occasional attempt. Since ancient Khmer sandstone sculptures are pretty crude, I figured that perhaps my limited skills might be up to the challenge. After two and a half hours of mucking about, I see now that the torso could be less elongated and the polished look I was hoping for now looks all wet. I was also experimenting with different render settings here. Till the next pathetic attempt at organic modeling, thank you very much for taking the time to view this image.

Not bad, I'm not sure if the torso is too long, I do have a feeling the shoulders could use some work, but maybe that's the way those sculpures look... Still, not bad, not bad at all...

I don't think it looks like the torso is too long either. I'm also thinking that with that type of texture on it, the light would also look like that, but I'm no expert! It looks like you had a wonderful project to delve into. Very nice work! (:

Good piece of work - I know how hard it really is, coz I've starting modelling now - still a long way to go before I reach this stage! I wonder if there should be more definition in the body, and the shoulders seem to slump a little, maybe the deltoids need some rounding off. I don't think the body is elongated at all. All the best, Matt.

I think this looks most excellent, and reminds me of some of the sculptures I saw in the museum of Cairo. I like the shaders you used, gives a bit of porcelain feel. Torso looks well in proportion, but like Mike said, the shoulders could use some work. It now looks as though his arms are sticking out of his shoulders, instead of being attached to them. Excellent work, and keep up the great work!

actually Moe that's what a sculpture would probably look like if you take the time & place this is based on into account, you can see from some of the wonderful photo's you took with your lovely wife while you were visiting the area you have basically caught the style of sculpture that the people of the about 12th century around that area actually did while building the temple. I think it's 100% spot on, gets my vote mate

This looks very good Moe! I agree with billy-home: some 12th century scultures weren't all details. Keep up the great work!

I think the polished look you're after would come off better if you lose the shine from the breaks, there is usually marble dust lying in the cracks of these areas which would give you more of a diffuse effect. You could lose an eye on those nipples too :) Always Good Stuff

Maybe a alt. POV from the ground up, to make it look more majestic ? Australian sandstone trends not to have much or any shine at all, just a suggestion. Cheers

looking excellent to me, although i must agree that the shininess conveys a wet-like effect rather than polished stone effect. keep doing organics! your hand is just as good with organics as it is with objects, it is just the practice that needs a little catching up to do.

Don't be so hard on yourself modeling organic structures, let alone the human body, takes time and practiceand is definately not beyond you.
