This looks bloody awesome so far! I have attempted to make it on many occasion and given up LOL! I would love to see a wireframe and low poly version. Have you used displacement maps for the hand guard? Or are the heads purely modelled? Either way this is excellent stuff. Looking forward to seeing the finished piece.
