Description

This is a Portraite I did in Corel Painter IX.5 from a photo I took of my friends daughter Grace. The point for me is to make the person look the way I see them and not the way the camera see's them. Cameras have no brain and they don't know what to leave out. For instance the camera shows frekles far more harshly than they really appear and generally show too much detail. Corel Painter allows me to reorginize the pixels in a much more asthetic way. I really like doing these and after 30 years of painting with paint, I especialy like the no cleanup at 1 in the morning.

Brilliant portrait, and I totally agree with your point! I have argued this with my wife, as I sometimes boost color, or adjust brightness. She says "That's altering reality", and I say, "That's not the way my eyes saw it." Great stuff!

Beautiful soft portrait. :) Looks like she is thinking about what the future might bring. And it does seem to be a good time. Outstanding work! *****

You are exactly right! Here is what I imagine: If I were to meet Grace, I would think, "She looks much harsher than kahshe's painting. But the next time I saw her, she would look more like the painting. After a week, or a month, or a year, I would no longer see any discrepancy at all. Seeing isn't just a matter of recording. Good eye.

...absolute fantastic! ... beautiful. That is what painting is all about (digital or with paint): to work out the image just the way you see and feel it.

great pix. btw i agree w/ you that cameras are too harsh, especially after looking at all these high-res poser/daz characters with all the pores showing in the nose so intensely they look kinda like alcoholics :D true, there is no clean-up of the oil mess at 1 am like you said, but i'll confess i'm missing the smell of turpentine lately!

The clean up at 1 or 2 in the morning is a bugger but I just can't stop with paint. She would make a good oil painting too.

A very beautiful portrait. The girls seems far away in thoughts and has a wonderful expression in her face.

I wanted to go back in your gallery (it's my first visit to your work), and I chose this because others have too. I can see why. Whatever the photo looked like, you've captured an inwardness and privacy not easy to capture in art. Your use of shadow is delicate, the softening of her hair is quite expressive, and the dappling of light across her hair and face is expressive as well. A thoughtful portrait, surrounded by hues of reflection (quiet greenish grays), and very simple yet very complex. Sounds hackneyed, but it's true: It's simple but it has quiet worlds within. (As Gun says, "far away in thoughts".) I'm glad I've found your gallery and I'll return...
