A common complaint about XD images is that there isn't or aren't any "backgrounds", or that the backgrounds are just black. One of the reasons for this is that unlike some fractal software, you don't necessarily have to zoom and pan around "inside" the fractal in order to get a "nice shot". Often the *entire* fractal is interesting, so the user simply opts to show it all versus just a portion of it.

And, you can zoom in like I did with this one, or do a variety of other things to the background to give the fractal some "context".

So, it's not so much XD, but the choice of the user.
