This was drawn toward the end of our Alaska vacation, while we were riding the Alaska Marine Highway ferry. We had seen a large number of these amazing creatures during our trip and I felt as though I needed to portray one before we left. It is not clear to scientists why whales leap out of the water, or breach. It may be to remove barnacles and parasites from their skin, or to signal other whales, or just for fun. In Alaska, where whales feed, they need to conserve their energy for the migration to tropical breeding waters. So the only whales typically seen breaching are young, playful calves. Hence the title.
