Description

The Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a primate of the Cercopithecidae (Old-world monkeys) family, closely related to the baboons and to the Drill. Both the Mandrill and the Drill were once classified as baboons in genus Papio, but in my usual search to discover information it seems recent research has determined that they should be separated into their own genus, Mandrillus. The Mandrill is the world's largest monkey species. The word mandrill means "man-ape". The Mandrill is recognized by its olive-coloured fur and colourful face and rump amongst males, a colouration that grows stronger with sexual maturity; females such as this one taken at the Zoo in Antwerp recently have duller colours Exif Data Eos 5D 400mm 100th sec @ f5.6 ISO 800 Minor cropping and postwork to correct colours and darken background

The most colorful of all. The Mandrill is very impressive, but not for his incredible colors have you seen the teeth he has ???? Terrible !!!! and it's also probably the most agressiv one with the Baboon.... I remember them in Africa, they really afraid me when I was a little girl, lol ! Superb shot Danny, and the expression she has is magic. She's looking at you in a strange way, be careful !!!!

Nice shot, Danny. This is such a colorful animal, but I believe very difficult to photograph. We have several at the zoo in my hometown, but they are often hiding. When they do appear, I find that they move so erratically that most of my photos are throw aways. My best attempt is probably this one: http://www.pbase.com/tim32225/image/60769148
