I think you should render at a higher resolution. Here are som hints. The sky is very important, even if it is not directly visible, it can give a whole other feeling to an image. Furthermore You should try taking some fractalnoise over the terrainmap in the terraineditor, some erosion might do the trick too. The use of bumpmaps on terrains is something you almost can't live without. A havy bumpmap really can do the trick. But the best way to learn is just to try and try again. Just start messing with al kinds of effects and you'll get better very quickly. And inspiration is good to take a look at the gallery's of other beginners and professionals.
