Description

I once was given the assignment along with another man of installing a Westerbeke diesel in the yacht "Maranatha." It was an attractive black hulled vessel with two major masts and very light stays. The old Otto engine had been uninstalled in a very destructive manner and the wood in that area did not look very able to accept new fasteners. In any case I decided the first thing to do was to create "motor mounts." When I got back to the shop there was a message for me. The owner was furious. "Just install the damned engine," was the message. I took that as a no. Taking a check to the marine machine shop where the propellor shaft was to be made led to extension of what I already perceived. No salvor was needed. The ship was pristine and only needed the engine removed and replaced. No parts! Some of us have had the experience of loss of memory associated with loss of a job. I myself found consolation in archaeology and anthropology. Using the methods of reconstruction of a civilization seemed useful. Now my daughter-in-law has lost her job as a joint venture has failed to meet expectations for licensing. I am wondering when to approach her on how resumes fade and how one prepares for the sense of losing one's mind in inactivity. The future has no memory. Thus when a future is cut short there is no fall back. This boat "molly" was built in England and according to later parts of the book, the red sails and light green hull is typical of a North Sea rig. It currently has a Portuguese owner. This led to memories of introduction of the "Alianca" brand wine in a larger glass bottle to compete with "Lancers" and "Mateus" in the more ancient porcelain amphora.

Superb artwork! I once attended a management seminar. The guy running it asked us in the audience to raise our hands if we'd ever lost a job. Without fail, almost each of us did. He next asked us to raise our hands if we later found something better or more fullfilling or both. Again, most all raised their hands. Or, in the words of the famous Negro league pitcher, Satchel Paige, "Don't look back, somethin' might be gainin' on ya'. My best to you and yours, T.P.

Lancer, pshaw. Mateus, all right. Rose is seldom serious anywhere, including among the Greeks. Which is as it should be. Boy, paint Rolling SStones lips on the bottom of that hull and it's gangbusters. I have had one similar experience--screw it.
