Beautiful, and as you say, strongly reminiscent of carved wood. I would hazard a guess at this being a Tersa Sphinx [Xylophanes tersa] - have a look at this page, 9th picture from the top.

i have a photo i took of a moth like this!!! unfortunately its out of focus, and not nearly as high quality as this one.... did you also run for your camera as soon as you saw it? :P I'l see what can be done to clean up and put the photo online, and il drop u a pm! Love this shot!
