Description

This bird is one of the smallest of the eight pelican species, but the wing span is still around 8ft. The pelican is white, grey and pink in colour with dark grey wing tips. The top of the beak is yellow and the inside of the pouch pink. Mature individuals have long feather plumes on the back of the head. Of course, they also have a classic pelican beak with the huge throat pouch beneath. Lifestyle: They feed on a variety of foods, including small invertebrates and amphibians but their main food is fish. Only the brown pelican dives into the water from the air. All the other species plunge their heads under the water whilst floating on the surface and fill their pouches with fish and water. They then shake the water out of the end of their beak and swallow the fish whole. Sometimes they will move away from water into drier areas to feed on locusts.

You have shown what might be considered by some as a comical and awkward bird to actually be a creature of grace and beauty. The mottled coloring on his beak is incredible. That sharp point at the end looks to be carefully avoided! His neck feathers looks incredibly soft. Just wonderful detail to be seen here! Outstanding!

I should never look at the gallery before I post a picture, I'm so unworthy. This is just indiscribable (for me) but the simplisity of form and the striking detail are breathtaking! Thank you so much for posting!

Fascinating - I always thought a Pelican was a Pelican now I know not so. I also learned they have a beak at the end of that rather long bill. Excellent portait amd information.

Very cool shot and great information. We must have brown pelicans in our area, s.e. Texas, Gulf coast. I have a shot of a pelican diving into the water that I took on the wall in my office. Great shot.

It's the first time I see a Pink Pelikan ! I usually see the white ones. He has a very delicate color, and a very particular beak. I don't remember the white ones has this strange extremity, as a big claw. Very interesting this shot. And always with a high level, so neat. I dream to shot a Pelikan when he eat a fish.... lol ! Have a nice day my friend. Hugs
