Description

Apollo Lunar Module (LM) The Apollo Lunar module was the only true manned spacecraft ever built. It was only meant to operate in the unique conditions of space. Built to operate in the 1/6 gravity of te moon, a flight-ready LM'sstructure would not support it's own weight on Earth. Because it would only operate in the vacuum of space, it's designers did not worry about aerodynamics, resulting in it's unusual spider-like appearance. Since the LM did not incorporate a protective heatshield, none ever returned to Earth in one piece. After a mission was completed, the LM was either sent crashing back into the lunar surface, or allowed to burn up on reentry through the Earth's atmosphere. The LM displayed here is a replica of the J-series lunar module used on the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions. Craftsmen from the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, Located in Hutchinson, Kansas, fabricated this unit. Information found with the Lunar Module at Evergreen Aviation Museum. I do hope that this has been informative for all, and with the ever present people visiting the sight, it was impossible to capture a clear photograph. However, the people do give proper perspective to the module. HUGS!!!! Only two more days to the long weekend. Storms coming in, so guess the picnic is OUT! Hope you each have a great time though. HUGSSSS!!!!

Once again you provide is with fascinating reading. And i agree, the people do add a great sense of scale. The next time you go back...would you mind grabbing that little blue chopper up in the corner for me? Id love to come to work in one of those sometime. #:oD Have a wonderful weekend Claudia! #:o)

That is a wonderful photo of the LEM, and the people add a significant sense of scale and proportion. If the LEM was the only true manned spacecraft ever built, how would you classify the main Apollo capsule that was attached to the LEM, or the Space Shuttle orbiter? They travel in gravity-free space and are maneuverable by the occupants. Too bad the manned space program has gone backwards since those halycon days.

(I'm guessing that it's the "only true manned spacecraft" because it was never designed for or operated on earth or in its atmosphere.) Clearly, this is the one used for the faked moon landings . . . and if it all wasn't faked then why is the upper stage still attached? How did the guys get back? (oops, the sarcasm is spilling all over . . . )
