AloooooHa!
Wassssssssup! Been a little busy with work lately and haven't had a chance to really get out and shoot stuff. I really gotta start planning to retire, this work stuff is for the birds.
This shot is from last week, taken at 04:30 am while cruising through my little hometown on my way to catch the sunrise. I had time to kill as I was up and about a little too early. This is Pahoa town, barely a mile in length it is still basically the same town it was when it was first a rugged sawmill town then a sugar mill. Today Pahoa is trying to keep it's charm and remain a remnant of it's past. Main Street Pahoa has maintained its western style storefronts and wood boardwalks in a charming turn of the century Victorian style.
Unfortunately within the last 20 yrs. this town has turned into a hippie magnate drawing many of the druggies from the 70's here. There is quite a big drug problem in this town, so big in fact this probably wasn't one of my greatest ideas be shooting alone at this hour. But I couldn't resist the temptation to shoot this during the early morning hours....one eye on the camera and one on my surroundings. The building pictured is one of the Mexican restaurants/rooming house/bar/real estate office/curio shop. Sort of a multipurpose building. This town is so old, one match and it would be history.
Thanks for having a peek, and I hope to get out a little more in the next couple of days to shoot things I really love....Have a great holiday weekend for those who are affected...Much Aloha to All~~

WHAAAAAAAZZZZZZZUUUUUUP YOURSELF!!!! I am also planning on retiring actually....have done so since i started working at the age of 18. #:o( Excellent nightshot of this empty street....should be empty at that time of night as well...or i would never let you go there alone. Sounds like a rough neighbour-hood. The grain really adds to the mood. Great job buddy! Have a wonderful weekend ya hear! #:o) ALOOOOOOHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

This is a very cool shot and I like the way the storefront is lit. It draws me in closer for a second look, I like when a picture does that!!!

We use to cruise down there in the late 50's or early 60's. After some time later, the population grew less as well as jobs were down. A lot of businesses were going down. The town was about to be a "Ghost Town". But wouldn't you know, the Hippie generation came and moved in. The Hippie's opened up little shops in Pahoa town. The lights were fascinating and more little shops were open. In a sense, the Hippies saved this town from dying. But as time went by and being that the land was cheap, more people moved in. Homes and land was affordable for the low income. Funny how crime increases with more people. Its unfortunate that at this time, Pahoa is known as the Wild Wild West of Hawaii and much druggies are there. I just hope the crime enforcement people will save the community. The town then looks the same as the town now. Excellent capture and story my friend. Aloha

One wouldn't know it was a drug town from this pic...like the perspective of the buildings and the silence of the early morning..

It's hard to imagine this little western looking town is in Hawaii??? Doesn't seem to fit the image we all have in our minds about Hawaii!!! Excellent poatwork and facts Dave & Erroll's addition too, I hope things work out for this amazing slice of cultural diversity!!!!!! If the hippies saved the town once, they should be able to do it again right??? Aloha...

This old town looks a lot like one near here. Love the b/w - abandoned street look.

Really nostalgic looking. Hippies from the 70's, huh? Nuff sed. Would like to see some local color...maybe someone I used to know would pop up...lol.

Lovely capture, sorry to hear such a relic of a town has started to be over ran by the wrong crowd. Appreciate you taking the risk to give us it's memory.
