Description

PORTLANDIA 1985 By Raymond Kaskey, 1943 - Located: Portland Building 1120 SW 5th Avenue Portland, Oregon Portlandia is based on a figure in Portland's city seal of a woman, dressed in classical clothes, who welcomes traders into the port of the city. The sculpture is placed on the a landing on the third floor of the Portland Building. The sculpture is 36 feet tall but if Portlandia was magically to stand up, she would be over 50 feet tall. Portlandia is the second largest hammered copper statue in America (the largest is the Statue of Liberty). Before being installed at the Portland Building, Portlandia was floated down the river on a barge and then transported through the city on a large truck. People lined up on the streets to see it. When it reached the building, the people crowded around the sculpture for a chance to touch it before it was installed out of reach. Raymond Kaskey was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1943. He studied architecture and graduated from the Yale School of Architecture. He then became a professor and sculpted part-time. His earlier art was mostly abstract. His current art is figurative (depicting recognizable people and things). Kaskey now lives in Washington, DC, and is a full-time sculptor. The plaque for Portlandia has a poem written by Ronald Talney (a resident of Portland). She kneels down and from the quietness of copper reaches out. We take that stillness into ourselves and somewhere deep in the earth our breath becomes her city. If she could speak this is what she would say: Follow that breath. Home is the journey we make. This is how the world knows where we are. Storms again along the North Carolina Coast, will wrtie and answer more when the storms are gone. May you each find happiness in all of the small things today. Mine will be raindrops. HUGS!!!

I'm not sure I like the statue, but I like the way you have 'framed' it :-))

Ce Magnifique! A wonderful POV of that most imposing lady. If I had room in my humble abode I would use her as a live-in bodyguard. The statue contrasts beautifully with the colorful horizontal and vertical effects of the background. And I like your frame edging and the explanatory text. Another winner for ClaudiaLee!

Interesting how the building looks so odd, kinda twisted and skewed, I can't get passed that!

The windows between the pink columns reflect the building across the street and therefore cause the wave pattern. The Portland Building itself is painted mostly salmon-pink and turquoise, and actually looks quite like a gift wrapped package.
